Microsoft Windows Update
1. What Has Changed
Microsoft has intentionally redesigned the Windows Update restart experience to ensure devices remain secure, current, and compliant with the latest updates without prolonged delay.
Once a Windows Update has been installed and a restart is required, your device will automatically restart once it detects that your computer has been idle (inactivity). This will happen with little to no warning, regardless of any open applications or unsaved work.
2. What This Means for You
- If a restart is pending, a device that remains idle will automatically restart.
- You will not receive multiple pop-up notifications or repeated prompts to postpone the restart, as was the case in previous versions of Windows.
- Any unsaved work—including open documents, emails in progress, spreadsheets—may be lost if an automatic restart occurs while you are away from your device.
3. What We Recommend
- Save your work frequently throughout the day, as best practice, particularly after you have received any Windows Update notification.
- Do not leave your device unattended with unsaved work if you have recently seen or dismissed any Windows Update or restart notification.
- If a restart notification appears, save your work and complete the restart.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Keeping your device up to date is essential to the security and continuity of San Jacinto College's systems and data.
